BBQing in Killarney Glen Court - some tricks and safety tips!

It comes around every year in Calgary, BBQ season! And in fact, many BBQ all year around, despite the snow and cold. Regardless of whether you are a seasoned pro and have your BBQ already, or are looking to start, these tricks / hacks and safety tips will be helpful:

  • Check the by-laws! At the time of post, KGC usage of propane barbecues are pre-approved for use. Natural gas barbecues require board approval and anything wood burning is not allowed.

  • Consider the size of the BBQ you wish to purchase. Measure the space where you plan to store/use your BBQ and consider whether you will also need your deck space for storing bikes, kids’ toys, having pets, and adding patio furniture. There are many sizes and styles and going to any BBQ sales center / home store can show you a range of deck-sized BBQs.

  • Consider where you will use the BBQ. Vinyl and heat do not mix, and wood can burn! Most of the units have vinyl dividers and siding. Ensure when cooking that the BBQ is a safe distance away from the exterior elements. It is a good idea to constantly feel by hand the surface behind where the BBQ is, while it is on, to make sure it is not hearing up the vinyl and / or railings. You don want to wait until it warps, or worse.

  • This goes without saying but do not leave your BBQ unattended while it is on. Flare ups can happen in seconds. Always have an eye on your barbecue when it is running. This is even more important if the weather is hot, as a hot BBQ can be augmented by hot summer days and move quickly into an emergency.

  • Have a BBQ specific fire extinguisher on hand, as it might not be safe to just have water near by due to chemicals and gas, etc. Buy a BBQ specific fire extinguisher and have within easy reach when you are BBQing on the deck.

  • Regularly check the propane tank levels and attachments and consider storing with a BBQ cover to protect it and reduce the chance of theft. A well-maintained BBQ will reduce the risk of dangerous/annoying issues.
